A Home for Everything: Built-In Storage Units (and Where to Add Them!)

Small or large, we love our homes. Anyone who’s ever moved knows just how much stuff we tend to accumulate over time: clothes, shoes, toys, books, tools, souvenirs, cookware… it goes on and on.

But there some really clever ways to create space to store all our stuff: built-in storage units.

They create functional spaces unique and special to you to keep your most loved possessions out of sight but easily within reach.

Smart storage spaces are a great way to:

  • Squeeze a little more living space out of your home
  • Reduce the amount of furniture you need (think bookshelves, wardrobes)
  • Add pizzazz and visual interest to your rooms

Get inspired by some really clever built-in storage ideas for every room in your home. Then give us a call and let’s make it a really fun, functional, and fabulous project.

The entrance

One of the most underused areas – the entrance – can certainly use a resdesign.

Cut down on clutter and create a built-in unit complete with a coat rack and cubbyholes, doubling up as a built-in bench. Perfect for Oregon’s wet winter weather.  it’s a great way to redesign what’s typically a very underused area.

Under the windows

What could be better than relaxing and enjoying Oregon’s beautiful autumn season from a comfortable built-in window seat? Bring a book and a cup of tea and it’s a party for one. Add drawers or a fold-up storage area beneath the seat, and a niche on either side to display your favorite books, photos, or ornamental pieces.

Along the walls

This one’s for the book-lover in your family. Make a stunning display with an otherwise empty wall by creating wall-to-wall bookshelves for all your favorite reads (including, of course, Portland author Brian Doyle). A blank wall transformed to the central feature of the room. Genius.

‘Post-and-lintel’ doors

Accessorize your dullest doors with floor-to-ceiling units to create a stunning frame for an ingenious bookshelf storage unit. Not a big reader? Place your most prized photos or ornaments on display, and enjoy them every time you pass through your door.

Around the radiator

It’s hot – but only because it’s really smart. Add shelving units around and above your radiator to create a seamless surface that extends to your walls. You’ll have ample space to transform a boring space into a really functional one.

Under the stairs

If Harry Potter must live under the stairs, then surely we can at least give him great storage.

No one enjoys that uneasy feeling of reaching into under-stairs closets to find what they’re looking for. So forget closets, and think slide-out drawers that fold right back into the wall. Make the handles small and transparent to keep the hallway looking clean.

Stair landings and staircases

Stairs are a treasure-trove of unused space. Create one, two, three or more pull-out drawers out of your first few steps. Use them for practical hallway items like shoes, scarves, or gloves handy for Oregon’s cold winters. Or hide your valuables there instead, where no one will think to look!

Bedroom walls

Bedrooms are perhaps our most private rooms in the house, where we retreat to be ourselves. And we always need just that little bit more space. Use the walls of your bedroom to install a built-in desk, complete with shelves for your paperwork. You’ll add even more character to the room you love to be in.

Bathroom

Often, the bathroom is the smallest room in the house, but it doesn’t have to be the one with the least amount of storage space. Custom-made vanities and glass-front cabinets and provide light and easy storage for all your essentials.

Kitchen islands

Kitchen islands are perfect for adding extra cabinets for those – everythings – we tend to buy for the kitchen. Maximize the space with built-in bar counters, bookshelves, and drawers to free up space for all the much-loved non-essentials.

Along a hallway

Dead spot? Do something creative with what would otherwise be wasted space. Transform a wall into a vibrant storage unit and display area.

Beside the laundry machines

If you could have the laundry room of your dreams…what would it look like? Make it a utilitarian heaven by adding storage above or beside your washing machines. Just imagine… counter space, drawers, a cabinet for the laundry basket… Ah, the possibilities!

A niche or alcove (between wall studs)

Simple, functional, stylish: shelves, counters, drawers. Everything you need, right between two walls. Maximize storage in places you’d least expect it.

In the dining room, instead of chairs

Feeling a little squashed in your dining room? Install a banquette with storage space for a modern, practical seating option that doesn’t take up any room. Perfect for bright corners.

By the bed…or beneath the bed

Your bed can do a lot more than help you get a good night’s snooze. Create nightstand ledges and platform drawers that not only set the bed apart from the rest of the space, but also offer lots of storage. And great for pets – you’re welcome, Fido.

Up by the ceiling

It’s not a last resort, but nearly. If you’ve run out of room everywhere else, consider a ledge just below the ceiling to display your most favorite ornaments or books.

In the attic

Attics can look a lot larger than they are with the right renovations. You’ll need creative storage solutions, but this is the space where you can really experiment. Use mirrors to open up the space, and glass doors to lighten the area. New bedroom? Check.

Convinced? Built-ins can help you get rid of bulky wardrobes and bookshelves, find new spaces for all your stuff, or just create beautiful areas with visual interest,

Top Tips for Storing Christmas Ornaments and Decorations

Do you have many Christmas ornaments casualties? When the holidays are over, taking down Christmas ornaments and lights can feel like a job more suited to acrobats and contortionists than us mere mortals with feet of clay.

But this year, we’ve got some great creative ideas to make this job a little easier and help keep your holiday decorations safely stowed away until next year!

Step 1: Sort

The first step is to triage your decorations.

Separate indoor and outdoor decorations, so you can pack away each one at a time without having a complete mess everywhere.

Then, group your home decorations by kind: wooden ornaments, table centerpieces, mantelpiece decorations, holiday napkins, candles, place cards, and special dishes.

Next, it’s time for the lights. Untangling the web of tangled lights is no easy task. Use your arms to wrap them around your elbow as you take them down, keeping an oval shape, and label them with masking tape so you know which ones goes on the tree first next year.

Pull out labels and start designating storage boxes and crates so you know what goes in each box.

Step 2: Store

Once you’ve sorted your decorations, it’s time to store them. You can go with store-bought, or get inspired by some of these wonderfully creative ideas, even if you’re short on space.

Wrap wooden decorations in tissue paper and place them in a cardboard box, largest items first.

For more delicate or glass ornaments, use bubble wrap or tissue paper (not newspaper, as it can damage the decorations). Pack similar-shaped ones together. Secure the odd-shaped ones with tape. If there’s extra space, add more bubble wrap or newspaper (here, you can!).

Label boxes with the list of its contents, or buy flat, stackable one-layer boxes so you can easily see what’s inside.

For garlands, wreaths, and wrapping paper, why not use a hanger and garment bag or dry-cleaner to keep everything tidy? Hang them at the back of an attic or den closet.

Wrap Christmas candles in socks cellophane to keep them from melting, and store them in a labeled storage box away from heat. Does your kitchen have special storage nooks and crannies? If so, keep your special holiday dishes and tableware together in a cabinet or hutch.

Add a lining of bubble wrap of soft cloths in between your plates, and fill gaps with newspaper.

Store Christmas tree lights by wrapping them around cardboard pieces to keep them safe and untangled for the following year. There are store-bought solutions, too, perfect for securing and storing lights.

All done? Just the tree left. Use old belts to tighten the branches against the bark so it’s easier to wrap up (try cellophane!) and place in a deep bag.

Step 3: Secure

Are your Christmas decorations taking up far too much space in your house, even with these tips?

Ideally, your Christmas decorations could have their own storage area, wherever that is, so you can keep everything together.

Maybe it’s time to consider smart storage solutions, like an under-the-bed storage system, overhead compartment in your garage, dining room cabinets, clever under-stair shelving and drawers, or attic storage closets with shelves.

With a dedicated section of storage for your holiday decorations, next year will be a cinch!

Genius Storage Solutions for Awkward (but Much-Loved) Serving Platters

Think of the types of dishes you love to cook, and there’s a good chance you’ve bought the perfect serving platter for it. After all, nothing makes a statement like a beautiful serving platter or specialty tray on the table, a mouth-watering presentation of the result of all your efforts.

Your guests have arrived. Perhaps you start with a large spinning board of appetizers, followed by a heavy chop platter for meats, an oval wooden platter for baked bread and cheese, and a large round serving plate (and its lid) for vegetables. Finally, you bring out the two-tiered dessert cake plate, and your dinner is a delight for all.

At the end of the evening, your heart is full (as is your belly), and you scrub, dry, and polish your beloved trays with a smile on your face. But that’s where the joy ends. Because some things in life just don’t fit naturally: square pegs and round holes; alcohol and driving; serving platters and kitchen storage.

You try lodging your oversized platters horizontally in the cabinet, but you’ve had to take out half its contents first. Next, you try plonking them in a drawer, but they sit awkwardly on top of your other plates, and threaten to topple them when you place it beneath them. You think of leaving them on the table, but it feels too cluttered. Finally, you decide to leave them in a forgotten box that ‘you’ll deal with later’. What a sad ending for those hardworking platters that have been the crowning glory of your feast.

But it needn’t end this way. Serving platters are never easy to store—unless, that is, you’ve created the perfect storage solution.

And it’s easier than you think!

You can create space-saving nooks, clever drawers, and custom-made cabinets for your serving trays.

No more clumsy cabinet clutter, no more precariously placed plates, no more difficult defective drawers.

Instead, welcome in inspired custom-made stacked dividers, pegged drawers, and vertical, tilt-down, and toe-kick drawers, perfectly suited to your kitchen and your oversized platters. A small renovation is sometimes all that’s needed.

There’s a lot of room to be creative, and small touches can easily make space for those larger items.

You can store large serving platters in neat little toe-kick drawers beneath your counters, where they’ll be out of the way and won’t be knocking against other plates. Or create vertical shelf dividers next to a cabinet so each serving plate can stand on its side, taking up minimum space.

You can even build wall-mounted shelves where your platters can slide gracefully into the décor.

You can even create pegged drawers custom-made specifically for those cherished items you know you’ll always keep.

After all, you’re hardly going to stop hosting dinner parties, and you’re not going to be using paper plates anytime soon. You may as well rethink your storage solutions for your serving platters. They’re at the center of your table, so why not give them a little nook of their own in your kitchen as well?

What are your favorite serving platters? Will they be present at your dining table this holiday season?

We hope you’re inspired by some of these ideas. Keith Green Construction is here to help you renovate your kitchen and build in creative storage solutions to house your favorite pieces.

5. Polka-Dotted Charm Command Center

This charming command center began with a stationery-lover’s passion for polka-dotted file folders. Other elements of whimsy? An old mirror transformed into a bulletin board and a few mismatched photo frames lend an eclectic charm to a functional space.

This sneaky solution is beyond clever. The end panel of a kitchen cabinet, it keeps keys and paperwork as accessible as they are out of sight.

9. Command Center in a Drawer

If you don’t have wall space that you can dedicate to a command center, consider drawing organization space from a centrally located drawer. Equip it with a power bar, and it can double as a family charging station too!

Ok, this isn’t a command center so think of it as a bonus. We just loved the idea and think it would make a great addition to your command center. If you’re one who likes to plan your week’s meals ahead of time, here’s a fun DIY project that will transform a picture frame into an erasable weekly menu planner.

Summer is a good time to clear out some of your accumulated clutter. But beware of overzealousness and heed the advice of experts: Tackle one small project at a time. Wise counsel in general, this is particularly good advice during your summer – which may be dotted with vacations, weekend jaunts, and visitors from out of town.

Choose a project small enough to be seen to completion, so that you don’t have to abandon it midway and find yourself in more of a mess than when you started. Linen closet organization is one such perfectly contained home organization project. In this post, we’ll share 9 practical linen closet organization tips.

1. Group Like with Like

Here’s a recommended approach for most home organization projects: start by pulling out all the contents of your linen closet and grouping like with like. Instead of sorting by type, experts suggest grouping by household member. Your beds are likely different sizes. Sorting by person will make it easier to grab the right sheets for the bed you’re making. It will also make it easier to spot the extra items that are unnecessarily taking up space. More on this in the next point.

2. Limit what you store

The number one obstacle to a well-organized home is that we tend to accumulate too much stuff. Less is more. Try to limit your linen to 3-4 towels and a couple of sets of bedding per family member, with an extra set for guests.

3. Maximize your space utilization

If your house has limited storage, you may want to use your linen closet to hold more than linen. Here is a creative way to use the inside of your closet door to neatly store pharmacy items.

17. Hidden TV Storage

That large screen television is great for watching the game, or for your late-night movies. But it has a way of ruining the harmonious aesthetic of your family room or bedroom. Enter the motorized lift, which lets you tuck your TV away inside a piece of furniture and then bring it out at the click of a button. Tadaa!

Family Room Organization Ideas

Next in our series on home organization, we focus on the family room, den or living room – whatever you call that room where your family congregates to spend time together, read, play board games, watch TV, or sit by a roaring fire. Because we spend so much time there, the family room tends to get filled up with clutter.

In your family room, the most obvious storage potential comes from your coffee table or ottomans. Choices of material abound. From leather, to wood, to wicker… you can pack heavy storage without sacrificing style. You can even give beautiful purpose to that vintage suitcase!

Log Storage

Curling up by a toasty fire in the winter can be delightful, but where to stowe those logs? We favor recessed storage to save space and keep your fireplace neat and tidy.

Old Stuff Day

happy-old-stuff-dayThe End of One Adventure, and the Start of Another

There are days to remember, days to spring clean, days to celebrate… On March 2 this year, you’ll have a day to do all three: Old Stuff Day.

How often do we reply “same old, same old” to an eager “How are you?” question? Well Old Stuff Day, celebrated nationally across the United States, is the occasion to cherish the old and make way for the new.

Old movie camera 16 mm with three lensesOn this day, people bring out antiques, first-love letters, photographs, favourite items of clothing, and share them with friends and fans over coffee or the internet. On Old Stuff Day, you’ll find just about anything and everything for sale on EBay, Craigslist and in local papers and garage sales as people take advantage of this celebration to clear out unwanted items.

Many people believe Old Stuff Day is a day for nostalgia, for looking back at important milestones, revisiting the past and thinking about what’s gone by. But to fully embrace this American tradition with murky origins, you must also look forward, do something different and break old routines.

Old Stuff Day is a chance for us to re-organize our homes, to sort through the old and the vintage and decide if it’s part of our future. To honor this day to its full potential requires dedication… because that’s what it takes to break the old habits and routines, and make space for the new.

Studio Shot Of A Black Rotary PhoneFor many of us, Old Stuff Day is about a clean slate, of keeping what we need: quality over quantity. It means putting aside the humdrum of the everyday and starting those important projects we’ve been putting off for our homes, for our careers, for our lives.

So this March, add a little extra spring in your step. Use Old Stuff Day to tackle the projects that seem too daunting during the rest of the year – to take on a new challenge and add a little fresh energy to lives.

After all, spring is a time for renewal – and a perfect season to rejuvenate ourselves and our homes.
